"The
[homoerotic] subtext is written that way intentionally.
Let's say you're a television writer and you want Clark
Kent and Lex Luthor to "meet cute", with Clark
saving Lex's life and the two becoming friends. Now, I can
think of at least a dozen simple ways to accomplish this
that DON'T involve getting the two guys lip to lip the very
first time they meet!
There's plenty of subtext in the dialog, as well. While
a lot of the [homoeroticism] is coming from the director
and the actors, I think it would be pretty hard to deliver
a line like, "We have a future, Clark" WITHOUT
it sounding pretty dang sub-texty.
Then too, if one wasn't planning subtext, it would have
been easier to make Clark and Lex the same age, so that
the oddness of an adult millionaire going out of his way
to spend time with a high school freshman wouldn't be an
issue."
